A microbiome-bile acid axis mediates protection from chronic liver disease in females
A study published in Cell shows that isoUDCA, a bile acid enriched in females, is produced by a gut bacterial consortium favored by estrogen. Through the SREBP2-STARD4-CYP7B1 signaling pathway, it promotes hepatic cholesterol handling and bile acid metabolism, alleviating chronic liver injury. The mechanism links estrogen status, gut microbiome composition, and the protection females receive from liver disease on a single signaling axis.
The pyrin inflammasome senses OCTN2-mediated uptake of extracellular ʟ-carnitine from muscle injury or ingestion
A study finds that the pyrin inflammasome senses extracellular L-carnitine through the high-affinity carnitine transporter OCTN2 (SLC22A5), triggering IL-1β-mediated inflammation. Muscle injury or ingestion of L-carnitine-rich muscle tissue raises extracellular L-carnitine, and the authors propose OCTN2 as a potential target to reduce such inflammation.
