Targeted radiation shows promise for life-threatening kidney cancer complication
In brief
UT Southwestern reported a phase 2 trial published in JAMA Oncology in which 23 kidney cancer patients with inferior vena cava tumor thrombus (IVC-TT) received 3 or 5 fractions of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR/SBRT) before undergoing nephrectomy with thrombectomy 4–14 days later. The 1-year recurrence-free survival rate was 71.4%, exceeding the prespecified historical benchmark of 55.7%, with a median follow-up of about 9 years.
Why it matters
Provides specific figures of 71.4% 1-year recurrence-free survival against a 55.7% historical benchmark, comparable with prior IVC-TT data and suggesting an abscopal effect for future randomized testing.
