China Launches Medical Insurance Wallet 2.0 With Nationwide Cross-Provincial Family Account Sharing
Start here
China's National Healthcare Security Administration has upgraded the medical insurance wallet to version 2.0, making cross-provincial sharing of personal account funds fully operational nationwide as of October 16. Users can set up and use sharing arrangements through the national medical insurance service app, an Alipay mini-program, or offline service windows. Sharing is restricted to close relatives, and shared funds cannot be passed on to others. Permitted uses now go beyond medical treatment and drug purchases to include paying premiums for resident medical insurance and long-term care insurance. Within-province sharing over the past five years has already recorded more than 780 million instances, involving over 100 billion yuan. How quickly the new cross-provincial functions are adopted, and whether the scope of permissible uses expands further, is still open.
