Maternal E-Cigarette Nicotine Exposure Worsens Aortic Aneurysm in Mouse Offspring
Start here
A preprint reports that exposing pregnant mice to e-cigarette vapor during gestation increases abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) growth in their adult offspring. Pregnant ApoE-/- and C57BL/6J females were exposed to e-cigarette vapor, and AAAs were later induced in adult offspring using either elastase or angiotensin II, with ultrasound follow-up over four weeks. Beyond larger aneurysms, maternal exposure raised AAA incidence in ApoE-/- males. Effects were overall stronger in male offspring than females. The work, posted to bioRxiv on October 24, 2026, suggests in utero nicotine exposure may have lasting vascular consequences, though the findings come from mouse models and await peer review and confirmation in human studies.

Maternal e-cigarette nicotine exposure increased offspring AAA growth in two mouse models and raised AAA incidence in ApoE-/- males. Pregnant ApoE-/- and C57BL/6J females were exposed to e-cigarette vapor during gestation; AAAs were induced in adult offspring with elastase or angiotensin II and tracked by ultrasound for 4 weeks. Effects were overall stronger in males.
