A microbiome-bile acid axis mediates protection from chronic liver disease in females
Start here
A study published in Cell shows that isoUDCA, a bile acid enriched in females, is jointly produced by gut bacteria favored by estrogen. Through the SREBP2-STARD4-CYP7B1 signaling pathway it promotes hepatic cholesterol handling and bile acid metabolism, alleviating chronic liver injury. The mechanism links estrogen status, gut microbiome composition, and female protection from liver disease on a single signaling axis.
