New CRISPR approach targets gene fusions found in 1 in 5 cancers
In brief
A Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre team publishing in Science Advances used CRISPR-Cas13b to recognize and silence nine oncogenic fusion transcripts, including BCR-ABL1 and EWSR1-FLI1, by targeting their fusion breakpoint sequences. The work is a proof of concept completed only in cell models.
Why it matters
Cas13b guided by fusion breakpoints silenced nine oncogenic fusion transcripts in cells; tumor delivery is untested.
