Hemispheric Asymmetry of Neuroimaging Biomarkers in Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease: Clinical and Cognitive Outcomes.
In brief
A study of 585 patients with early-onset Alzheimer's disease across two cohorts found that hemispheric asymmetry in amyloid PET, tau PET, and cortical atrophy was common and associated with hemisphere-dependent cognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Longitudinal analyses showed stable amyloid PET asymmetry, decreasing tau PET asymmetry, and increasing MRI volume asymmetry, suggesting a time-lagged peak pattern from amyloid to tau to atrophy.
Why it matters
The study shows hemispheric asymmetry in early-onset Alzheimer's disease follows a time-lagged amyloid-to-tau-to-atrophy peak pattern over time.
