STAT+: Mark Cuban wants to crack open the market for rare disease treatments
In brief
Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs will devote part of its new Dallas plant's capacity to making n-of-1 custom rare disease therapies, shifting from cheap generics toward personalized genetic medicines. The first two batches are DNA-like molecules: one crafted by California chemists to patch a rare neuronal gene mutation in a single patient, and one developed with Dutch researchers to treat a progressive myopathy in adults. Cuban wrote in an email that it was an obvious chance to help those in an unfortunate situation.
