Repeating stretch of DNA offers a new clue to Alzheimer's susceptibility
In brief
A study in Nature Neuroscience by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and other institutions found that longer CCG repeats in the FAM193B promoter raise the odds of Alzheimer's disease. Two Chinese cohorts totaling 1,516 patients and 1,674 cognitively normal participants showed that a longer copy with at least 18 CCG repeats carried about twice the odds compared with no more than 11. Analysis of UK Biobank participants of European ancestry, with 2,674 cases and 22,996 controls, showed a weaker association using different thresholds.
Why it matters
The study used long-read sequencing to identify CCG structural variants in short-read data, then quantified risk across multiple cohorts.
