Red and Near-Infrared Light Therapy Linked to Shorter ICU Stays in Randomized Trial

Synthesis

Light exposure is emerging as a possible factor in how long patients stay in intensive care. Observational studies spanning 2001 to 2022 — in psychiatric wards, Korean orthopedic units, and a sepsis ICU — have consistently associated natural light with shorter stays, though none could prove causation. A 2025 Brazilian randomized, triple-blind, sham-controlled trial of 60 ICU patients strengthened the case: daily photobiomodulation with red and near-infrared LED light shortened ICU stays and improved muscle function. The biological mechanisms proposed to explain the effect remain unvalidated. Open questions include whether the observational findings generalize to other settings, replication of the trial in larger populations, and which patient groups benefit most.

Natural Light and Red/Near-Infrared LED Photobiomodulation Linked to Shorter ICU Stays: MedCram Literature Review and RCT

Observational studies from 2001 (psychiatric wards, 2–3.7 days shorter), 2009 (Korean orthopedics, 8–19% shorter), 2018 (sepsis ICU, 4.8 vs 5.8 days) and 2021–2022 link daylight to shorter stays, but causality is unproven. A 2025 Brazilian randomized, triple-blind, sham-controlled trial in 60 ICU patients found daily PBM (red/near-infrared LED) shortened ICU stay and improved muscle function. Mechanistic hypotheses remain unvalidated.
