Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak in DRC and Uganda Spreads Beyond Response Capacity
Start here
An outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has also spread to Uganda, was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO on 15 May 2026. It is the DRC's 17th Ebola outbreak. More than 140 days after the declaration, the virus is spreading beyond what responders can track: only about a third of confirmed cases were known contacts, meaning most infections are being found outside monitored transmission chains. The response has been further strained by attacks on at least a dozen health facilities, and U.S. funding cuts in 2025 forced the International Rescue Committee to withdraw support from primary care facilities in Ituri Province. No licensed vaccine or treatment exists for Bundibugyo Ebola, leaving containment dependent on classic surveillance and contact tracing.
