[News] Opinion | I’ve Worked in Congo for Decades. I’ve Never Seen an Ebola Crisis Like This.

In brief

Heather Kerry, country director of the International Rescue Committee in the Democratic Republic of Congo, says the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak there and in Uganda, declared a PHEIC by WHO on 15 May 2026 and the DRC's 17th outbreak, is spreading beyond what responders can track. More than 140 days after declaration, only about a third of confirmed cases were known contacts, at least a dozen health facilities have been attacked, and U.S. funding cuts in 2025 forced IRC to cut support to primary care facilities in Ituri Province. No licensed vaccine or treatment exists for Bundibugyo Ebola.
