Chromosome-level genome assembly published for the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana
Start here
Researchers have released a chromosome-level genome assembly and transcriptome resource for the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana, a species long used in medicine and a research model for regeneration and neurobiology. The assembly comprises 14 chromosome-scale scaffolds totalling 177.66 Mb, along with 17,789 annotated gene models and 30,131 transcripts. The resource, posted as a preprint, gives the species a far more complete genomic foundation than previously available, supporting work on gene function, comparative genomics among annelids, and studies of the leech's bioactive salivary components. The findings have not yet undergone peer review, and validation, functional annotation and community uptake remain open.
