Global Consensus Renames Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
In a Lancet program, experts described a renaming of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that won 98% consensus support. The new name is polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), and the old and new names will run in parallel for 3 years. The condition affects about 170 million women of reproductive age worldwide and many postmenopausal women; the rename aims to highlight its endocrine, metabolic, reproductive, psychological, and skin manifestations. Ultrasound assessment of 2000 women showed PCOS patients do not have more benign or pathological ovarian cysts, but more antral follicles.
The case presents a transparent process of patient co-design, modified Delphi, and nominal group techniques as a transferable reference for renaming terms in other diseases.
