Tsinghua Team Publishes in Nature: Chemically Induced Totipotent Stem Cells Yield Mouse Embryo Model with Beating Heart
In brief
A team led by Ding Sheng at Tsinghua University reports in Nature that mouse embryo models (ciToti-EM) can be established in vitro starting solely from chemically induced totipotent stem cells (ciTotiSC). These models traverse the morula, blastocyst and post-gastrulation stages and closely resemble natural embryos at E8.5 in morphology.
Why it matters
The paper gives conditions for a mouse embryo model from chemically induced totipotent stem cells alone that develops to the beating-heart stage, offering an in vitro platform for studying early embryogenesis without germ cells.
