De novo design of enantioselective artificial metalloenzyme photocatalysts
In brief
Sandip Mishra and colleagues report in Nature that generative protein design combined with directed evolution produced highly enantioselective artificial metalloenzymes that selectively bind metal polypyridyl photocatalysts. The evolved proteins support diverse light-driven reactions, achieve high catalytic turnover and catalyst recycling, and work with commercially available racemic metal complexes.
Why it matters
The study links scaffold design, directed evolution and spectroscopic mechanistic validation into one workflow transferable to synthetic metal catalysts lacking natural protein partners.
