Structural basis for protocadherin-1 recognition by New World hantaviruses

A research team resolved the structure of the complete ANDV Gn–Gc spike bound to human PCDH1 at 2.6 Å resolution. The PCDH1 EC1 domain inserts into a central pocket formed by four Gn molecules and contacts four viral glycoproteins simultaneously.
Why it matters
Reconstituting soluble spike and receptor fragment complexes, solving the interface by cryo-EM, and cross-validating with chimeric viruses, deep mutational scanning and antibody experiments offers a transferable path for virus receptor research.
