Nonsense-mediated decay constrains transposable element-driven evolutionary innovation
In brief
Plowman et al. used long-read RNA sequencing after NMD inhibition to assemble an NMD-extended transcriptome (~217,000 transcripts, ~80% unannotated), revealing that NMD buffers transposable element-driven transcriptomic innovation by degrading TE exonization transcripts containing premature termination codons.
Why it matters
Long-read transcriptomes after NMD inhibition show NMD buffers TE-driven transcript innovation and links to lung squamous cell carcinoma prognosis.
