Buildup of normally harmless enzyme stunts brain growth in mice with Angelman syndrome
In brief
Jason Yi's team found in Angelman syndrome mice that elevated neuronal asparagine synthetase activates the brain's stress response and suppresses normal brain growth. The study links UBE3A loss to the enzyme's buildup and to reduced protein production; blocking asparagine synthetase production restored normal brain growth in the mice.
Why it matters
The study connects UBE3A loss, asparagine synthetase buildup and abnormal brain development in mice, and blocking the enzyme restored brain growth.
