Endometrial ablation plus levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system versus endometrial ablation alone in women with heavy menstrual bleeding in The Netherlands (MIRA2): a multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled, superiority trial.

In brief

The MIRA2 randomised controlled trial (NL-OMON54839) showed that inserting a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) immediately after endometrial ablation reduced the 2-year hysterectomy rate in women with heavy menstrual bleeding from 10% with ablation alone to 4%.

Why it matters

MIRA2 randomised controlled data show LNG-IUS inserted immediately after ablation cut 2-year hysterectomy rate from 10% to 4%.
