Sanofi breaks ground on insulin plant after securing German government support
Sanofi has broken ground on an insulin API plant in Frankfurt, Germany, backed by €400 million (about $449 million) in German government support approved by the European Commission. The 36,000-square-meter facility is scheduled to reach full production in 2032. Sanofi committed to producing at least 1.1 metric tons of insulin annually through the end of 2042 and maintaining a 1-metric-ton API stockpile, with priority supply to the European Economic Area during shortages. The support reflects EU concerns about insulin supply: if Sanofi shut the plant, the EEA would have only one insulin production facility, and capacity is being diverted to GLP-1 receptor agonists.
