Methyltransferase RsmB chaperones E. coli ribosome assembly by orchestrating the recruitment of ribosomal proteins.

In brief

The E. coli methyltransferase RsmB coordinates 30S subunit assembly through its chaperone activity. Real-time single-molecule assembly experiments show that its product, 16S m5C967, has limited effect on the affinity of the 3'-terminal domain of 16S rRNA for ribosomal proteins.

Why it matters

The source separates RsmB's help in assembly from its methylation product's effects, suggesting the enzyme's physiological contribution may come more from chaperone activity than the modification itself.
