Should amylin have been obesity therapeutics’ primary target from the start?
In brief
Analysts argue amylin should have become the primary obesity target earlier, as it may be better tolerated than GLP-1 drugs. Novo Nordisk's CagriSema achieved 22.7% weight loss at 68 weeks in the REDEFINE-1 trial, and the FDA has accepted the filing; Eli Lilly's EloraTZP showed 23.3% weight loss at 48 weeks in Phase II (Zepbound alone 14.8%, placebo 3%), but adverse-event-related discontinuation rates of 10.8%-27% give mixed safety data.
Why it matters
Amylin may offer better tolerability than GLP-1 drugs for obesity treatment.
