Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitor Use and Levels of Hemoglobin, Markers of Iron Metabolism, and Erythropoiesis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials.

In brief

A meta-analysis published in JAMA included 85 randomized clinical trials and found that SGLT2 inhibitor use was associated with small increases in hemoglobin and hematocrit. Of 70,543 participants, 78 trials (67,208 participants) compared SGLT2 inhibitors with placebo and 7 used active comparators; versus control, the hemoglobin difference was 0.60 g/dL (95% CI 0.55-0.66) and the hematocrit difference was 2.36% (95% CI 2.19%-2.52%).

Why it matters

Pools 85 randomized clinical trials to quantify hemoglobin and iron metabolism marker changes with SGLT2 inhibitors versus control.
