The 4 stages of women’s heart health: Experts present new framework
In brief
Four medical societies led by the American Heart Association published a life-course framework for women's heart health, with three guidance articles in Circulation. The framework covers transitions including adolescence, menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, and postmenopause, incorporates psychosocial and structural factors, and designates perimenopause as a distinct cardiovascular risk stage. Sadiya Khan said cholesterol and metabolic changes during perimenopause can signal early cardiovascular risk, and early identification and intervention may reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
Why it matters
The framework places adolescence, menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause, and postmenopause on one cardiovascular care pathway for cross-specialty continuity.
