A microbiome-bile acid axis mediates protection from chronic liver disease in females.
In brief
A Cell study used a metabolomics database of 9,254 individuals to identify the endogenous bile acid isoUDCA as a mediator of female-associated hepatoprotection. isoUDCA traced back to gut bacteria enriched by estrogen. Mechanistically, isoUDCA promotes SREBP2 nuclear accumulation, upregulating STARD4 and CYP7B1 to drive cholesterol metabolic conversion.
Why it matters
Reveals an estrogen-microbiome-bile acid axis underlying sex differences in liver disease and positions isoUDCA as a therapeutic target.
