WHO Declares Mpox Clade 1b Outbreak in Africa a Global Health Emergency
Start here
On 14 August 2024 the World Health Organization declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency of international concern. The emergency is driven by clade 1b, a more transmissible and deadlier form of the virus spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. African cases have risen 160% this year, with roughly 500 deaths, and about 70% of cases are among children. A US case-control study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found the JYNNEOS vaccine about 35.8% effective after one dose and about 66% effective after two, supporting a layered approach to protection. Open questions include how far clade 1b will continue to spread and how quickly vaccination can be scaled across affected countries.
