Naked mole-rat genome decoded telomere to telomere
Start here
Researchers have produced a diploid, haplotype-resolved, telomere-to-telomere assembly of the naked mole-rat genome, annotated with transcriptomes from 23 tissues. The assembly resolves features including satellite-free centromeres, the Y chromosome and a structurally polymorphic 25-megabase region of chromosome 15. A companion long-read assembly of the Cape dune mole-rat, a shorter-lived solitary relative, enables comparison between the two species. That comparison identifies gene losses that uncouple sperm motility from fertility, including Irgc, and duplications linked to immunity, reproduction and genome stability, among them six copies of Pms1. Together, the resources make the genetic basis of the naked mole-rat's longevity, cancer resistance and reproductive biology directly accessible to study. Follow-up work using these assemblies remains open.
