Decoding the naked mole-rat genome, telomere to telomere

Decoding the naked mole-rat genome, telomere to telomere

In brief

A diploid, haplotype-resolved, telomere-to-telomere assembly of the naked mole-rat genome, annotated with transcriptomes from 23 tissues, resolves satellite-free centromeres, the Y chromosome and a structurally polymorphic 25-megabase region of chromosome 15. A companion long-read assembly of the Cape dune mole-rat, a shorter-lived solitary relative, enables comparison that finds gene losses uncoupling sperm motility from fertility, including Irgc, and duplications tied to immunity, reproduction and genome stability, including six copies of Pms1. The resources put the genetic basis of the naked mole-rat's longevity, cancer resistance and reproductive biology within reach of direct study.
