Global ImmunoTalks: Marcelo Torres on Disease Tolerance, Microbial Load and IL-10 Deficiency in IBD

Marcelo Torres of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro gave a 50-minute Global ImmunoTalks lecture on disease tolerance in inflammatory bowel disease. He distinguished resistance, which clears pathogens, from tolerance, which limits tissue damage at a given microbial load, and described how IL-10/IL-10R deficient mice develop an IBD-like phenotype. Co-housing experiments showed a microbiome component can transfer disease; his group has also studied heme-driven inflammation via immune receptors and ROS in intracellular defense.
