MedCram Review: Bed-Head Elevation Eases Snoring, Reflux and Sleep Apnea in Multiple Studies

In brief

A MedCram expert lecture reviews clinical evidence that elevating the head of the bed by 12° to 30° significantly reduces snoring, lowers apnea-hypopnea index in OSA patients (15.7 to 10.7), and raises minimum oxygen saturation (83.5% to 87%) and sleep efficiency. A GERD randomized crossover trial found raising the head about 20 cm lowered RDD symptom scores without reducing quality-of-life scores, and 30° head-up sleep cut intraocular pressure in glaucoma, with 35% of patients seeing drops of at least 20%. Bed blocks, wedge pillows and adjustable beds are practical options, though inclined sleepers are unsafe for infants, who should sleep flat on their backs.
