Editorial Expression of Concern: Thyroid hormone inhibits lung fibrosis in mice by improving epithelial mitochondrial function.

In brief

Nature Medicine editors issued an Editorial Expression of Concern on 14 October 2026 about a 2017 paper reporting that thyroid hormone inhibits lung fibrosis in mice by improving epithelial mitochondrial function. Concerns cover similar-looking blots in Figures 3n and 4a and overlapping images in Figure 5e. The authors located a correct blot and replicated Figure 5e data, but could not locate the original data for Figure 4a; one author, Farida Ahangari, disagrees with the notice and other authors did not respond.

Why it matters

Editors flagged image concerns in a widely read 2017 Nature Medicine lung fibrosis paper and one figure's original data is missing.
