Canada Records First Human H5 Infection in a British Columbia Teenager

In brief

A previously healthy teenager in British Columbia is Canada's first confirmed H5 case, with symptoms starting on 2 November as conjunctivitis; the N subtype is undetermined but most likely N1. Family members and contact animals, including dogs, cats and reptiles, tested negative, and the patient had no exposure to poultry or dairy cattle farms. H5N1 has caused nearly a thousand human cases globally since 1997, with about half fatal, and most US human cases have been linked to dairy farms.
