Deep dive

Oncology drug development and evaluation already rest on a mature evidence language: endpoints such as overall response rate, duration of response and progression-free survival form the common framework for reading data at academic conferences. Taking relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma as an example, cilta-cel, a CAR-T therapy carrying two B-cell maturation antigen-targeting single-domain antibodies, has already reported safety in CARTITUDE-1, a single-arm, open-label phase 1b/2 study conducted at 16 centres in the USA, with overall response rate as the phase 2 primary endpoint and duration of response and progression-free survival as key secondary endpoints, providing a reference for how comparable assets present efficacy data at oncology meetings [5]. Meanwhile, biotech companies have long served as the discovery engine of the pharmaceutical industry and as vehicles of technology transfer bridging academia and large pharma [6], which explains why data from an academic oncology conference can directly move the pricing of a group of biotech stocks.

Judging from the on-site posts, what has been disclosed for ESMO 2026 so far is not a readout from any specific trial, but two different pieces of pre-meeting information that should be kept apart. The first concerns the observation framework for the conference itself: the author lays out four themes to watch in cancer medicine, accompanied by a plain-language guide to reading a survival curve; what the four themes actually are is not expanded in the post. The second is a market perspective: ahead of the meeting, six biotech stocks are testing investor expectations, namely Moderna ($MRNA) along with $ORIC, $ARGX, $RAPP, $RVMD and $ZBIO, with the core questions being how much good news is already priced in and what comes next; the post discloses no specific trial names, endpoints or numbers.

Relative to existing understanding, what these two posts advance is a matter of perspective rather than data. The first pulls attention back from any single dataset to the basic skill of reading a survival curve, which is precisely the readout language used by studies such as CARTITUDE-1 with duration of response and progression-free survival as key secondary endpoints [5]. The second explicitly raises the proposition that good clinical data does not necessarily lift the stock, treating the academic conference as a setting for testing whether market expectations and pricing are misaligned, consistent with the biotech industry's position at the intersection of R&D and capital [6], rather than merely a venue for data release.

The limitations are equally clear: the on-site posts contain no concrete information at the level of conference readouts. The specific content of the four themes, what each of the six companies will present, and the degree to which news is already priced in all remain to be confirmed once the meeting formally discloses them. Until concrete data arrive, the above can only serve as pre-meeting expectation mapping and does not constitute any basis for investment judgment.
