Mass. lawmaker Auchincloss favors boosting U.S. biotech over targeting China

Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) told the STAT Summit in Boston that Congress should invest in domestic biotech rather than rely on protectionist policies against China, which he said hurts U.S. competitiveness. He plans to introduce a bill modeled on Australia's system, letting early-phase trials bypass pre-approval evaluation by the national regulator to speed U.S. research. He also criticized the FDA's National Priority Voucher program and OMB proposals to override peer review, and backed cracking down on PBM practices and reforming 340B.

Rise in private testosterone prescribing risks overtreatment and more strain on the NHS

Stephen Atkin and Eric Kilpatrick warn in The BMJ that rapid growth in private testosterone prescribing in the UK risks overtreatment of men with nonspecific symptoms and shifts long-term monitoring costs onto the NHS. The UK testosterone replacement market was valued at about $205 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $365 million by 2032, with NHS community dispensing up 52% from 2020/21 to 2024/25 and subscription clinics charging £100–£375 a month. The authors call for national data and a reporting framework for private prescribers covering indications, patient numbers, monitoring and transfers of care.

STAT+: Pharma’s free lunches for doctors boost inappropriate prescribing, analysis finds

A Cochrane review of dozens of previous studies found that gifts and payments doctors receive from drugmakers increased inappropriate prescribing and the number of prescriptions written, likely raising health care costs. Pharmaceutical advertising or education aimed at doctors may also increase inappropriate prescribing and prescription volumes. Conflict-of-interest policies restricting industry-doctor interactions probably improved prescribing, while evidence on free samples and formulary decisions was insufficient.

Big ambitions, big fractures — Europe’s FIH conundrum: Back to School 2026

Stephen Hansen, Director of Biopharma Intelligence, examines Europe's struggle to compete globally for first-in-human (FIH) clinical trials because of its fragmented regulatory system. Unlike countries with a single point of contact and decision-making authority, the EU faces a disadvantage that is unlikely to change soon, despite five years of changes to its clinical trial framework plus new proposals and pilots. The piece surveys competing FIH efforts in the U.S., Australia, China and Asia ex-China, and notes fast lanes in Spain, Denmark and the U.K.

Outside of China, other Asian biotech hubs have early ambitions, too

Korea, Taiwan and Singapore are seeking earlier roles in global drug development beyond first-in-human trials, using regulatory reform, clinical infrastructure, patient access and government support. Japan is removing barriers to joining global trials. Asian hubs outside China and Australia have not yet become magnets for FIH trials, and each is offering sponsors its own reasons for earlier inclusion of its market.

Opinion: We proved bipartisan health care reform works in North Carolina. Let’s bring it nationwide

A University of North Carolina Sheps Center evaluation of North Carolina's Healthy Opportunities Pilots, covering more than 31,000 Medicaid enrollees from 2022 through late 2024, found Medicaid saved an average of $164 per person per month after all service and overhead costs. Participants had fewer emergency department visits and hospital admissions, more outpatient contact, and reduced food insecurity, housing instability and transportation barriers. North Carolina legislators voted in July to continue the paused program, and former state health secretaries Mandy Cohen and Kody Kinsley urge Congress and CMS to let states integrate evidence-based social services into Medicaid.
