Population-scale reconstruction of menopause dynamics reveals a physiological cliff at the final menstrual period.
In brief
Menopause involves a step-like physiological cliff at the final menstrual period (FMP) rather than a gradual transition. Applying an astronomy-inspired computational framework to two independent cohorts totaling 300 million laboratory tests revealed discontinuities spanning endocrine, skeletal, hepatic, renal and lipid systems, absent in males, concordant across populations, and attenuated by menopausal hormone therapy; dysregulation began more than a decade before FMP.
Why it matters
Overturns the gradual-transition view of menopause with population-scale evidence of an abrupt systemic shift.
