STAT+: Lobbyists and trade groups fight to shape how states regulate medical AI

The Federation of State Medical Boards has convened a 22-member AI workgroup, including executives from the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, Anthropic and Elevance Health, which met in Washington, D.C., in early October. The group is drafting guidelines to help state medical boards regulate AI tools that perform clinical functions with limited or no direct physician supervision. A draft could be made public in weeks to months, open for feedback before formal adoption, and could form the basis of state legislation.

Why it matters: State medical boards may soon get guidelines that shape how clinical AI tools are regulated and legislated.

How many ways can the Trump administration clamp down on international researchers?

The Trump administration issued two measures last week tightening rules on international students and scholars, who form a large share of the U.S. biomedical research workforce. None of the changes have taken effect, but an Association of American Universities survey found international applications to U.S. Ph.D. programs fell 21% this year while domestic applications rose 3%.

NHS labs fail to share data vital for diagnosis and care of rare diseases, investigation finds

A BMJ investigation finds that three of England's seven NHS Genomics Laboratory Hubs, those covering South East, South West, and North East and Yorkshire, are not routinely submitting genetic variants to public databases such as ClinVar, as required since 2024 under ACGS guidance. Even hubs that submit face significant backlogs. The labs cite staffing, technology and infrastructure gaps and say they plan routine submissions this year, while experts warn rare disease patients are missing out on diagnosis and care.

Why it matters: Non-sharing of NHS variant data limits rare disease diagnosis and public value of genomic testing.

How will legal challenges fare against CMS rule on gender-affirming care?

CMS finalized a rule barring federal Medicaid and CHIP dollars from paying for pediatric gender-affirming medications and surgery, set to take effect Oct. 13. The ban covers Medicaid recipients under 18 and CHIP recipients under 19, with hormones covered during a six-month tapering period until April 2027. Legal experts expect the rule to survive short-term challenges, and Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell plans to sue.
