FDA Approves First Heart Valve Designed to Grow with Children

The FDA approved the Autus Size-Adjustable Valve, developed by Autus Valve Technologies and approved via Edwards Lifesciences, for pediatric patients with congenital pulmonary valve disease. It is the first heart valve that can be expanded after implantation, growing from about 13 millimeters to up to 22 millimeters, and the first U.S.-approved valve with polymeric rather than animal-derived leaflets. Approval rests on a study of 62 pediatric patients at 12 U.S. sites, with no deaths or clot-related complications; longer-term studies are under way.

FDA’s Concerns with Unapproved GLP-1 Drugs Used for Weight Loss

The FDA is warning patients and health care professionals about risks from unapproved compounded versions of GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, used for weight loss, because these products are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality. The agency states that retatrutide and cagrilintide cannot be used in compounding under federal law, has warned telehealth companies, API distributors and outsourcing facilities over retatrutide, and set up import alert 66-80 to stop GLP-1 APIs with quality concerns at the border. It also advises discarding multi-dose vials within 28 days of first use and not using injectable GLP-1 drugs that arrive warm.

FDA approves first drug to improve functional capacity and symptoms in children with rare inherited heart condition

The FDA approved Camzyos (mavacamten) as the first treatment to improve functional capacity and symptoms in children with symptomatic obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, extending approval to pediatric patients weighing at least 30 kg, after adult approval in 2022. Efficacy was supported by the phase 3 SCOUT-HCM trial in 44 patients aged 12-18, where once-daily dosing for 28 weeks significantly reduced the Valsalva LVOT gradient versus placebo. The drug carries a boxed warning for heart failure risk and is available only through the Camzyos REMS program.

Why it matters: First pediatric approval for symptomatic oHCM, backed by phase 3 data in adolescents.

Meeting highlights from the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) 31 August - 3 September 2026

EMA's Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee has begun a review of all injectable iron-containing medicines over risks of hypophosphataemia and related bone problems such as osteomalacia. The review was triggered by reports questioning the effectiveness of current risk-minimisation measures for ferric carboxymaltose products, including serious cases after only one or two doses in people without recognised risk factors. PRAC will assess the benefit-risk balance and decide whether changes to marketing authorisations are needed.

Why it matters: A EU-wide safety review of all injectable iron medicines could change prescribing and product information for iron deficiency anaemia.

Lilly’s long-acting insulin wins NICE blessing ahead of potential UK approval

NICE has recommended Eli Lilly's once-weekly insulin Onswik for NHS coverage in Type 2 diabetes, based on the QWINT-1, QWINT-3 and QWINT-4 trials, which showed non-inferior A1C reduction and similar safety versus daily insulins degludec and glargine. Hundreds of thousands of UK patients could cut annual injections by 85% if approved. Lilly awaits MHRA marketing authorization, with an FDA decision possible by year-end and a CHMP opinion already secured pending European Commission sign-off.
